Biographie de l'artiste:

Date de naissance : 17 juillet 1934

Né à Saint-Jean, au Nouveau-Brunswick, Donald Sutherland goûte au métier alors qu'il est disc-jockey dans une station de radio de la Nouvelle-Écosse. Il n'a que 14 ans. Il a définitivement la piqûre pour le théâtre lors de ses études à l'Université de Toronto, où il apparaît dans de nombreuses productions montées par des étudiants.

Diplômé en 1956, Sutherland s'installe à Londres et étudie l'art dramatique à la London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Il apparaît dans quelques pièces de théâtre à Londres avant de décrocher, en 1964, son premier contrat au cinéma dans un film d'horreur italien.

C'est son rôle aux côtés d'Elliot Gould, Sally Kellerman et Robert Duvall, dans M*A*S*H (1970) de Robert Altman, qui propulse vers la gloire cet homme imposant (il fait 6 pieds et 4 pouces) aux traits singuliers . Il fait ses plus mémorables apparitions dans Kelly's Heroes, Klute, Don't Look Now, Ordinary People et Six Degrees of Separation. Sutherland milite activement contre l'intervention américaine au Viêt-Nam et son nom est étroitement associé à celui de Jane Fonda au début des années 70. Son fils Kiefer est également acteur et ils ont joué ensemble dans Max Dugan Returns.
