Emilio Estevez Biography:
Date of Birth: May 12, 1962
Born in New York City to actor Martin Sheen and his wife Janet, Emilio Estevez moved to Malibu in 1968 with his family, to further his father's career. By the time he was 18 and ready to begin his own career, his father was a successful award-winning actor, so Emilio kept his legal name of Estevez in order to blaze his own path, rather than his father’s stage name Sheen.
Emilio made a few guest appearances on TV, but it was his starring role as a delinquent in the TV movie In the Custody of Strangers (1982), with his father as his onscreen dad, that garnered publicity for the young actor. He quickly segued into film, with starring roles in Tex (1982), The Outsiders (1983), Repo Man (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985) and St. Elmo's Fire (1985).
He became known as one of the member of The Brat Pack—a group of actors who starred in major motion pictures directed towards young people—who banded together in their spare time. Other members included Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy, to name a few.
Estevez made his screen-writing debut with That Was Then... This is Now (1985), in which he also starred. The film did well, but his next screenplay, Wisdom (1986), which he also directed and starred in, was a box office and critical failure.
However, he bounced back, going on to star in hits such as Young Guns (1988) and The Mighty Ducks (1992) and their sequels. But he soon realized that his passion was for directing, and after helming Showtime network’s TV movie Rated X (2000), co-starring himself and his brother Charlie Sheen, Emilio began building up his resumé by directing episodes of The Guardian, Cold Case, CSI: NY and Close to Home.
Returning to the big screen, he united an all-star cast (including himself, his father and his ex-fiancé, Demi Moore) for Bobby (2006), the story of 22 people who were at the Ambassador Hotel on June 6, 1968, the night Robert F. Kennedy was murdered there. When Bobby premiered at the Venice Film Festival, it received not only a standing ovation, but the Biografilm Award. Most recently he directed and co-starred opposite his father in the independent film The Way.
Estevez married singer Paula Abdul in 1992, but they were divorced two years later. He's currently engaged to journalist Sonja Magdevski and has two grown children with ex-girlfriend Carey Salley.
