Jonathan Pryce

Jonathan Pryce Biography:

JONATHAN PRYCE

Date of Birth: June 1, 1947

Jonathan Price was born in Holywell, in North Wales. Before winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy for the Dramatic Arts, he studied art. After completing his education at the Royal, he joined the Liverpool Everyman Theatre Playhouse. A year later, he returned as the Artistic Director.

By the mid-1970s Jonathan was becoming a fixture on the London stage with appearances in The Taming of the Shrew, Antony and Cleopatra, Measure for Measure, Hamlet and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. Having won the coveted Tony award for his work in his Broadway debut, Comedians, he garnered a second one 15 years later in the musical Miss Saigon, playing the Eurasian Engineer.

From the mid '70s to the mid '80s, Jonathan started making his mark on television in telefilms like Daft As a Brush, The Day Christ Died, and Murder Is Easy. His feature film debut was in Voyage of the Damned in 1976. But it wasn't until 1983 that he made a big impression as a manipulative journalist in The Ploughman's Lunch and later as the hapless clerk at the center of the dystopian epic Brazil (1985).

During the remainder of the '80s, Jonathan appeared in some negligible comedies like Haunted Honeymoon, Jumpin' Jack Flash (both 1986) and Consuming Passions (1988). In addition to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, he appeared in The Rachel Papers (both 1989) playing Norman. The best showcases for his talent were the 1985 historical thriller The Doctor and the Devils, the dramatic ensemble piece Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), The Age of Innocence (1993), his subtle, nuanced portrayal of British author Lytton Strachey in Carrington (1995), his Juan Peron to Madonna's Evita (1996), the headline-crazed villain, Elliot Carver in the 18th Bond film, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), and Governor Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

Never fully letting go of his stage roots, Jonathan has returned a number of times performing in musicals such as Oliver and My Fair Lady. He returned to television for mini-series such as Victoria & Albert, telefilms such as David and commercial work for Infiniti automobiles.

Jonathan reprised his role as Governor Weatherby Swann for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007). He also plays the U.S. President in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and reprised his role for the sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2012). Pryce's went on to star in Hysteria (2012), in which he played a doctor working on the invention of the vibrator, and in the film The Woman in Gold (2015).

He appeared in the holiday flick The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017) opposite Dan Stevens and Christopher Plummer, and in the drama The Wife(2018) opposite Glenn Close.

The following year, he earned much acclaim for his portrayal of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio in the Netflix drama The Two Popes (2019), including Lead Actor nominations from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Married to actress Kate Fahy since 1974, the couple have two sons, Patrick and Gabriel, and a daughter, Phoebe, and live in London, England.
