London-born Dev Patel had very little acting experience when he was chosen to play the lead role in the feature film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), which went on to achieve worldwide critical success, including an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Dev's only prior role was when he was picked from an open casting of hundreds to play the role of Anwar in the British cult series Skins (2007 to 2011). He also filmed a guest role on the TV drama Mr Eleven.
For his motion picture debut in Slumdog Millionaire, Patel was nominated for a BAFTA Film award. He also won a British Independent Film Award as Most Promising Newcomer and a Broadcast Film Critics Award for Best Young Actor/Actress under 21. Next, he appeared in the action adventure The Last Airbender (2010) and then in the comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012). He went on to star in the critically acclaimed biopic The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) opposite Jeremy Irons, and the true story drama Lion alongside Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.
For his work in Lion (2016), Dev earned numerous nominations for Best Performance By An Actor in a Supporting Role, including his first nomination from the Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. He has also earned nominations from the BAFTA Awards and the SAG Awards. Most recently, he played the role of Arjun, a brave hotel worker who tries to save guests during a terror attack in Hotel Mumbai (2019).
In addition to acting, Dev is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was a bronze medalist in the 2004 World Championships.
He continues to make his home in London.
