Quvenzhané Wallis was born in Houma, Louisiana to Venjie Sr. and Qulyndreia Wallis. Producers and casting directors for the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild were looking for a little girl between the ages of six and nine for the starring role of Hushpuppy, but Quvenzhané at the age of only five caught their attention during her audition. She had no previous acting experience, but her spirit and emotional intelligence convinced them she was perfect for the part. They were proven right when she became the youngest person ever nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in January 2013 at the age of nine.

She has since played a role in the critically acclaimed movie Twelve Years a Slave (2013) and starred in the new movie adaptation Annie (2014), based on the Broadway musical.

Quvenzhané's favorite pasttimes are reading, singing, dancing, acting, and playing her iPod and Nintendo DS. Her nickname is Naysie and her name is pronounced "Qui-ven-ZHEN-ay." Her favorite sports are basketball, volleyball, dance and cheerleading.
