STEPHEN HOPKINS
Date of Birth: 1958
Born in Jamaica, Stephen Hopkins was raised in England and began his career as a comic-book storyboard artist and later as an art director for numerous commercials, music videos and stage plays first in England, then expanding to Australia and Europe before starting his television and feature film career in the United States.
In 1990, he won a Critics' Award for A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) at the Fantasporto Film Festival. It was his first solo feature film directorial effort. Films such as Predator 2 (1990), Blown Away (1994) and Lost in Space (1998) followed, but it was his work on the critically-acclaimed series 24 that earned Hopkins not only his first Emmy award nomination, but a Directors Guild of America nomination.
His directorial work on the critically-acclaimed biopic The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) starring Geoffrey Rush and Charlize Theron earned him another DGA nomination, as well as a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes Festival, but more importantly, his first Emmy win.
Since then, Hopkins has worked with two-time Oscar nominee Hilary Swank on the thriller The Reaper (2007), and he is preparing to direct a TV series starring David Duchovny. Next up for the big screen, he'll helm Nautica (2008), an at-sea thriller set in the Bahamas.
