He's been requested by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), a highly influential aristocrat who was recently killed and has already been placed into another body. Without access to his memories, which were uploaded hours before his death, he has no idea who killed him and why, but would very much like to find out before others are killed.

When the police rule his death a suicide, Bancroft, who is convinced he was murdered, wants Kovacs to find out the truth.
