Synopsis

In pre-WWII Europe, young Leo (Mark Rendall) is in love with Alma. He vows never to love anyone else. However, when Alma is 20, her father sends her to America so she'll be safe. Leo, a Jew, is left to fend for himself, hiding from the Nazis.

Fast forward 70 years. A teenage girl, also named Alma (Sophie Nélisse), is struggling with love. She has a crush on a boy, and he seems to like her, but she pushes him away, afraid he'll think she's easy. Confused, he backs off. She worries that love only exists in books, but not in real life. However, Leo (Derek Jacobi), now an old man living in America, still dreams of his Alma from years earlier.

Canadian Connection: Partly filmed in Montreal. Sophie Nélisse and Mark Rendall are Canadian.
