Synopsis

Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is an established citizen of the Roman Empire: a military tribune, son of a Senator and a notorious ladies man. Marcellus’ stint as a military tribune comes at the same time as Jesus Christ’s entrance into the Roman Empire. Upon Jesus’ arrest, Marcellus is ordered to oversee the unit that will be crucifying him.

In the aftermath of the crucifixion, Marcellus starts to feel remorse and experiences haunting visions, which causes him to leave Rome and travel to Palestine. There, he converts to Christianity, and when news of his conversion reaches the Empire, he is forced to face the consequences of his treason to the Roman Empire.
