Synopsis

The year is 1940. It’s World War II and Germany has invaded France. Nazi soldiers enter the town and begin to move into the homes of the villagers.

Lucille Angellier (Michelle Williams) is a young French woman waiting for her husband to return from war. She lives with her overbearing mother-in-law, Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas). The pair must contend with German commander Bruno Von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts), who’s been assigned to their home.

Living under oppression and being monitored by a German officer causes a great deal of turmoil within the household. Madame Angellier forbids Lucille from interacting with Bruno. However, the young woman becomes involved with him and ends up falling in love.

Based on the acclaimed novel by Irene Nemirovsky.
