Date of Birth: August 24, 1973
Born in Washington, D.C., Dave Chappelle grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland; Yellow Springs, Ohio; and Washington, D.C. It was in Washington that at 14, he began his career as a comedian. His mother, an ordained Unitarian minister, often accompanied him to gigs while he was still underage.
By the time he was 20, Chappelle made his film debut as Ahchoo in the comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), followed by roles in Undercover Blues (1993) and Getting In (1994). After a guest appearance on Home Improvement in 1995, he was cast in a starring role in his own sitcom, Buddies (1996). Unfortunately, only two of the ten filmed episodes were aired before the show was cancelled.
Chappelle returned to films such as The Nutty Professor, Joe's Apartment (playing a cockroach), Bowl of Pork (playing Black Forrest Gump), Con Air, You've Got Mail and Undercover Brother. Along the way, he continued to do stand up, starring in his own HBO one-hour comedy special and making numerous appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Politically Incorrect.
In 2003, he wrote, produced and starred in Chappelle's Show for Comedy Central. The sketch comedy show was so popular that his contact was renewed for $50 million. In celebration, he wrote, produced and starred in Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2006), a motion picture featuring sketch comedy with plenty of musical guests.
After a lengthy hiatus from film and television, Dave recently returned to theaters in the film A Star is Born(2018) in which he plays alongside Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Chappelle and his wife Elaine live with their two children in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
